Winter Inspiration

The beaches off the Oregon coast are serene in winter. Often one will find them sparsely populated with still many a mild day to enjoy the sandy beaches in the comfort of quiet.

I love the soft, muted colors that winter brings the Oregon coast. Soft pinks, muted hues.

I created a soft, whimsical, ocean inspired necklace and earrings set for the winter inspiration design challenge by ArtBeads.

I choose small, soft pink, button freshwater pearls to anchor the design. I used glowing crystal copper Swarovski roundelle crystals with antiqued fluted copper beads to add intrigue and finished with a large copper pendant in a sand dollar shape.

I created a pair of matching dangle earrings with the Swarovski crystals in a larger size and am pleased with the look.

I've never worked with button pearls before and I must say, I am delighted with them. Their soft pink color is very consistent.

The deary, wet days of winter are coming to a close but in the meantime, creating jewelry always brightens my day.

Thankful Thursday

Today on this fine Pacific NW wintry day, I am thankful that the car accident I was in yesterday was not worse.

I was driving a work vehicle and stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross on a marked crosswalk when I was hit from behind.

Needless to day, I am bit sore and sluggish today, but these things can always be worse.

I've wondered if the universe is trying to tell me something. The longer I toil away at the day job, where it seems, disaster is waiting to strike...the more I feel I may have taken the wrong path.

Ever feel that way?

Old Lady Perfume, A Tale to Lighten my Mood.

It's been more than a tough week in my little community. Our Chief of Police, was killed in the line of duty and in a town with 1800 residents, there's just no way you aren't affected by this. I've worked directly with our Chief in my role as a community volunteer and as a social worker in the county. I have the priveldge of working with some of his children, directly in my office and in the community as some of them serve as law enforcement officers. It's like a member of my own family has been senselessly taken from us.

So, as I was suffering the blues I created a blue inspired treasury on Etsy (I admit..it's pretty) and took a trip to the tiny mall in the neighboring town.

I'm getting low on my favorite perfume and I was set on getting more when..to my dismay....I discovered that my longtime favorite perfume had been moved to...gasp...the old lady perfume shelf!!!! I was dumbfounded, surely this was a mistake. My dear 'Amarige' next to...'White Shoulders'? Really!? with 'Poison' poised close by? Say it ain't so!

I looked the perky teenage salesgirl next to me and said, 'let's see about finding a new scent'.

To make matters worse, I dropped by the 'Clinique' counter to see about something for these increasingly visible lines around my eyes. I turn 35 this year and it's all gone to hell.

Well, I found a new perfume, got that wrinkle cream and left the mall with my head held high. (Just don't look too close at my hairline..I'm desperately in need of a hair color job as my roots, sprinkled in gray, are showing!)

I guess this weekend needs to be dedicated to some care of the heart and clearly...body.

A look back on the past decade and thinking of dreams ahead.

Happy New Year, let the new decade begin! I find myself reflecting on the past decade, wondering where time has gone and in the end, feeling pleased with where I am as I venture into these new times.

As we rang in 2001, I was suffering the blues. I'd passed the quarter century mark to find myself divorced and my own immediate family splintered. I was working in the software industry, slaving away for some man, selling the idea of what something 'could' do and I was quite dissatisfied overall.

The following few years found me floundering in singledom, continuing to slave away in software sales and on the whole, completely ignoring the little voices in my head that reminded me I desired to step off that track and walk a different, softer path and allow myself the freedom to express my creative side.

Mid-decade, I was blessed. I found a partner for life and experienced for the first time, a romance that was fueled by friendship, laughter and love. An unselfish love. We have been blessed additionally by two darling children and a life, that is focused on family.

This next decade will challenge us to make some difficult decisions and sacrifices both professionally and financially in order to relocate and provide our children with better educational opportunities and have family close by.

I know that I have had to experience the lows in the past decade to cherish the highs..the sweetness of the life I lead now. I wouldn't change any of it; I would walk the exact same path in order to end up here, with my loved ones.

I await with eagerness at what the road ahead will bring and I cherish the moments of today.

Future plans for DutchTouchBeads includes more 'Rustic Chic' designs and a new shop, dedicated to my passion for beads and my determination to become self employed.

A Break from the November Blitz of Craft Bazaars!

My family provided a much needed break from the craziness of Holiday Craft Bazaar season. The tagging, bagging and packing of all your goods, carted from bazaar to bazaar. I love it but it is exhausting.

So, to the beach we went! And a dreadfully misty day it was...but so worth it! The smell of salt air refreshed my spirit and I delighted in the silly play of my kiddos.

Feeding the seagulls is a most favorite sport.

Rustic Red Collage Necklace

I've been experimenting with designing jewelry with mixed mediums. Glass, gemstones, metal, crystal and ceramic combination's with a collage effect.
I participated in ArtBeads fall design challenge and with my new experimental designing, and a created a Rustic Red necklace set from the porcelain and ceramics section using Red Tree focal pieces. I am big 'Tree of Life' fan and the porcelain focal pieces are fantastic with perfect coral color.

I also picked out some sassy ruby red czech pressed glass rondelles, and mottled topaz oval glass beads to add some character and texture to the design.

I'm very pleased with the outcome of my endeavors, so tickled in fact that tomorrow..I'm wearing it to work.

It's out of this world!

I finally made a necklace and earring set for myself, thanks to ArtBeads summer design challenge. I had a hard time choosing just one pendant for their store..but was inspired by the wooden painted pendant from their canvas on wood selections. I was re-reading one of my favorite Sci Fi authors Anne McCaffery over the summer, her 'Freedom Series' and the pendant I choose reminded me of the plant Botany.

I wanted to bring out the bold colors in the pendant and ArtBead's colorful section of glass beads was what I needed! I rounded out the project with Swarovski crystals and pretty dark denim blue lapis lazuli oval gemstones.

I'm thrilled with my new necklace set, I think it's out of this world! I have never worked with a painted wooden pendant, but it is very captivating and I think it will make a great conversation piece!

Despite all the craziness in my life, I've been able to carve out some jewelry making time and have developed a cute little line of new flower earrings.

I'm striving to keep it lightweight, colorful and simple. Here are some examples:

Hey Blogging Friends!
I apologize that I've been MIA over the last month! It's been a little crazy and not sure how the rest of summer will play out. I went through an extensive job interview process and ended up with an offer to work for the State of Oregon as a Social Worker. At the same time, my grandfather was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and this has caught our entire family quite off guard. I spent some valuable time with him last week and as this disease is rapidly advancing, it likely will be the last time I see him alive.
It is a humbling reality to know and understand.

In jewelry news, I spent much May and a few weekend in June selling at a local Saturday Market. I Loved It! What a wonderful way to connect with my little rural community and I had so many compliments on my jewelry, that was really quite uplifting.
Last weekend I dashed from the Saturday Market and drove an hour into the Portland area for a private jewelry show at a hospital for the nursing staff.
I love nurses! The show was a big success and I have been asked to come back and hold a show for Christmas! Wow!

The only downside to all this news is that my new employment endeavors will not allow me to have as much time to work on my jewelry. I've decided this is good and bad. Bad because I love creating jewelry SO much! But the good is that it will force me to really 'define' my style and stop trying to 'do it all'. It will be interesting to see what shape look my jewelry will take in the next year.

A little happy dance!

Just a quick note to celebrate 400 hearts on my Etsy shop! It's a great feeling and I really appreciate all the compliments and business!

We had some 'brightness' this weekend. Won't call it direct sun..but it lightened up at times in between the seemingly endless rainfall. I snapped a pic of my peonies that are just beginning to open. Hopefully this will add some cheer to your day!

A passing visitor

A pretty goldfinch stopped by my bird feeders last week. This colorful little songbird was a nice change from our resident 'flock of sparrows' that normally hogs the feeders.
Tis a shame these little friends don't stick around longer, but off they fly to adventures down the road and back to the sparrows I go.

Today, I am thankful for my brother. When we were kids I wasn't sure there would ever come a time when I would like him, he was the typical annoying little brother.
Funny how quickly we grow out of childhood and into leading our own lives. My brother and I have enjoyed some fun adventures together and I look forward to many more. So while I may question the sanity of my parents on many things..one thing they got right was us.

Nature is the best inspiration

I am lucky to live in a state that has diverse ecological beauty. Oregon has lush fertile valleys, high deserts where the winter wheat ripples in the wind, a majestic coastline and snow capped mountains that divide the state from east to west.

These incredible sights inspire many of my jewelry designs. In Grant county, east of John Day are a set of mountains in the high desert called the 'Strawberry Mountains'.

I love the range of color found on these craggy hills. It is rugged country, remote and geologically rich with fossils and gemstones.

Here is a double strand necklace I recently created, inspired by the area. A rosy pink piece of Jasper anchors the design with varying shades of pink throughout the necklace.

Thankful Thursday - Happy Earth Day!

On this fine & non-rainy day, I am Thankful for Earth Day and a husband that has helped me become much more aware of my carbon footprint.

Pre-hubby days, I wasn't completely non-earth friendly, I was just lazy and choose to live in ignorant bliss. I lived in the burbs and they have curbside recycling there..but I didn't go out of my way to recycle. I was too busy working in office space hell and admiring my pretty pretty (but non-fuel efficient) car.

After I met my husband and began to really reconsider the things I had once held important, I realized that I was wasteful and neglectful of resources, including how I managed my own finances.

Hubby has taught me to recycle everything. Everything!!! and we don't have curbside recycling out here in the boonies. We wash out and sort all glass, cardboard and plastics, then place them in bins that we monthly drive into town and recycle.
Next step is to improve our composting.We've done all the 'green' things around the house, new light bulbs, digital thermostat, yada yada yada...but the biggest thing we've done (and granted..it's not always by choice...more like...necessity) is that we don't live in a big house. Heating 1200 sq ft instead of 24oo sq ft is a huge difference. So while I moan and groan that I'd like a little more space, the truth is..I really don't need it.

Even my son's favorite cartoon show 'Bob the Builder' preaches the 'reduce reuse recycle' mantra. I love it!For my family, Earth Day is all about values. I am content that we are not using more than we need. I have no doubt that my husband will find new ways for us to reduce our carbon footprint (he's dreaming of solar panels) and I'm proud of him for that and thankful I have a chance to participate.

Curling up with a good book is a luxury these days. My two little tots seem to occupy most waking moments. So, I try to unwind from the craziness of each day with a good book before I get some shut-eye. Currently, I'm going back and forth between some exotic Sci-Fi and one of my favorite non-fiction authors. It's quite the combo!

Fighting the Crud

This past week has been a nightmare of projects to finish and a nasty head cold that won't go away. As a double whammy, I came down with a 48 hr flu bug on top of it. What is with everyone getting sick this time of year?! Craziness!

So, to make myself feel a little better, here's a couple of pics of my kiddos enjoying an Easter egg hunt on the family farm Easter weekend. Gosh, they are awfully cute kids :)

Thankful Thursday

Today, on this gray and drizzly morning in the glorious Pacific Northwest, I'll admit, I'm a little cranky. I split my coffee on the way into work.
Hence, my inspiration for a Thankful Thursday post! Normally, I wash out my treasured coffee travel tumbler the night before and have no issues. But, last night, I worked late and frankly just forgot about it (and a few other things as well).

So, I'm thankful today that my dear best friend recommended this tumbler at Starbucks a few years ago, as I have been a happy, non-spilling coffee drinker ever since.

Except today.

Simple Pleasures

Last Friday, the weather was a bit chilly and the rain showers were on and off again. Nonetheless, I packed up the kiddos and headed to a spot I'd been meaning to introduce them too for quite sometime.
Trojan Park is what is left of a demolished nuclear power plant site, sitting along the Columbia River. In the early 90's, Oregonians voted to shut it down and back in 2006 the cooling tower was demolished.What is left, is a pretty wetlands park, home to many geese and water fowl and in the spring and fall, a resting place for migratory birds.
I packed the old bread and put the muck boots on the kiddos and off we went to feed the geese! How delighted where they when some of the bolder geese got up close to snatch a crumb. (I stayed close to make sure the geese behaved themselves).

We didn't get rained on, which wouldn't have mattered anyway, as in Oregon, you do what you need to do regardless of the weather! :)
I'm looking forward to taking the kids back again soon.

Tis a damp and soft morning here in Northwest Oregon. I have the urge to stay in my pj's and drink gallons of coffee and snuggle up with a good book.
But, here I am at work ~ so what I'm thankful for today is that it is Thursday...which is my Friday! I'm not wrapped in a cozy warm robe, I've my 'work' clothes on..but the coffee is good and the drive in was pleasant enough. The gray sky is drizzling, but it's relatively mild.
I did treat myself to some pretty earrings in my inventory ~ so I've some sparkle on my ears!

Japanense Quince

Things are blooming around our little cottage! The back of our yard is lined with Japanese Quince and Lilacs. The quince is already blooming and the flock of sparrows that hang out in these shrubs is truly amazing..close to 30 birds! Wonderful signs of Spring!

Easter's Around the Corner

I found these lovely egg shaped glass lampwork beads this winter on a gray, dreary, rain day. I tucked them away for just this time of year ~ thinking of Easter bunnies and spring flowers blooming.

Ooops..nearly didn't get this blog post in today!

It's a loony thing to be thankful for...a drying rack? But yes. It's one of those household items that I always seem to find a reason not to replace. So here is my new beauty...granted, it's about 3 years overdue. Bamboo..so it's a renewable product and sturdy.

Why does it take so long to replace some items around the house? Good grief the old one had been broken for 3 years!

I shake my head in wonder...but I am thankful for the new drying rack!! :)

First Kiss

Just have to tell the world how wonderful my little girl is! She's just about 2.5 yrs and is your typical busy busy toddler. Sometimes I have to catch her and sweep her up to plant a big kiss on her cheek, to which she generally giggles and squirms away.

But last night, as we were putting away her coloring books and crayons, she skips up to me, wraps her arms around me and gives me a big (and rather wet) kiss. First time it wasn't Mommy initiated.
I'm still feeling the love. :) Here's a pic of my little little at her 2nd birthday party.

Northern Lights

I've had a yen to see the Aurora Borealis for a long time and I have yet to make it up north to see them. Instead, I've been beading! (go figure ;) and was inspired by some pictures I ran across recently of the incredible beauty of the northern lights.

Weekend Adventures

It's been a long and busy week, time to look back and reflect on the things I am thankful for.

1) A willing and able husband, who graciously steps up to help even more with the kids when situations call for it.
2) A space in my small house, that is mine, my place to set up my little jewelry studio and forget about the responsibilities I carry, worries I have and just 'be' in that creative place.
3) Friends, family, co-workers and even today..my boss, who are willing to help gently remind me to continue to work on my goals and personal development.

i should have been a rabbit

I'm dieting. I hate that word, it feels evil, but it is what it is. I was born in the year of the Rabbit and there are days I wish I would have just been born as a rabbit; I'd probably enjoy all the veggies I eat more.
However, I did make a sincere New Year's resolution to find 'balance' in my life this year and eating *way* to many sugars and simple carbs..isn't balanced at all! Also, a lack of exercising is not balanced. Henceforth..I am determined to work on these problem areas in my daily life.
But there are times when I do feel like my dinner plate looks like this.

Swarovski Crystal Twisted Crystal Coins

I was a little nervous about ordering these sparkly wonders. I wasn't sure how the 'twisted' approach to the coin shape would play out. However, it's rare that Swarovski does crystal wrong.
I was pleasantly surprised. The twisted shape to the crystal coins catches the light and gives a rainbow array of color.
Admittedly, they are bold earrings. But, at a 16mm size, they are not so bold that they would be unprofessional in most workplaces. So, I've put simple sterling silver accent beads and hung them on simple, dainty, sterling silver earwires and VIOLA! Aren't they Sassy!

Lessons Learned while training to be a Census worker

Here are some of my thoughts about the four days I spent last week learning how to be a US Census Enumerator.

1) There are no points for over achievers, in fact, you may get 'called out' for going too far ahead.

2) Quickness of wrist and thumbs is a must. You will be quickly flipping through 10 manuals and map layout for training that is in no particular order.

3) Leave your sense of humor at home.

4) Although Census training is dry and rather boring, do not fall asleep in class.

5) When directions call for a #2 pencil, do not use a #1 pencil.

6) If you thought you knew how to read a map, please dump that knowledge and learn the U.S Governments way.

7) College degree? You may be over qualified for this assignment.

8) There is no room for common sense.

Oh, I don't mean to make it all bad, but it was quite dry and was a significant mind-set switch for me. My day jobs requires me to be innovative, a problem solver and think on my feet. The US Census Bureau has no appreciate for those skills. It was a bit humbling.

I did meet some nice folks and did my best to network and mingle (not always easy as I am quite the introvert at times). The week provided me with some time to myself which in my everyday life is a bit of a luxury. I was disappointed though....I had hoped my hotel room would have a bath tub as it's been ages since I've had a nice quiet, uninterrupted bubble bath...but it was not meant to be. My room had only a standing shower. It was clean though, so I'll take that.

Thankful Thursday

I'm still in Tillamook, Oregon, 'The Valley of Cow's' and while my nose has not adjusted to the local aroma..there are a few things I'm thankful for.
1) Time away from home. I miss my kids & hubby with a terrible ache, but sometimes it's just good to be reminded of how cherished that everyday life is.
2) Thankful for the incredible home cooked dinner I had last night. Friends invited me over and food and conversation was just wonderful.
3) I'm Thankful for perspective. Similar to #1, but a little different. My day job this year has been very challenging on many fronts. I've learned some tough lessons in life, but the end result is that I have some new appreciation for things and new perspectives to consider. That is a good thing, and I'm thankful for it.

The sweet smell of Tillamook, Oregon

I'm on a bit of an adventure this week. I've traveled to the northern Oregon coast to the community of Tillamook. Known for it's awesome cheese...Tillamook is as a friend most aptly puts it...'The Valley of Cows' and boy is my nose getting a fresh reminder of that!

I'm training for an assignment with the US Census Bureau (yes, I know....like I don't have enough to do!) and have taken a bit of time off from the Day Job to come out, get trained and then complete my assignment and earn some extra cash for some projects around the house (see visions of new flooring floating in my head!)

But first, my nose needs an adjustment! Maybe a trip to the Tillamook Cheese Factory and a scoop of ice cream will set me straight?Cheers, Jenni ~ DutchTouchBeads

The Beauty of Spring

In the Pacific Northwest our winters are wet and soggy. Even in a mild, El Nino year, such as we currently have, I find myself dreaming of March 2005, when I witnessed a rare event on the floor of Death Valley National Park: the floor of the valley was carpeted in a Desert Bloom!

To celebrate springs arrival, I've been invited by ArtBeads.com to design some jewelry that represents the Beauty of Spring to me.

On this crisp and sunny Thursday morning, I am thankful for:

The sweet little tales from my kid's teachers who tell me of how my kids, while separated by a fence, still seek each other out during outside playtime and contentedly play with each other at school. It fills my heart with joy that they are becoming friends (ages 4 & 2.5)

I'm thankful my rotten cat has been kind to me the past two nights and had cuddled cozily next to me *all* night...no 3 or even worse 5 am desperate yowls to alert me to his surely 'immediate' need to go outside.

President's Day Family Jaunt to the Beach

The husband and I both had President's Day off, so we decided to make a quick run to the coast and let the kids frolic in the sand.

Once we arrived to Cannon Beach, we got the kids outfitted in boots and coats and gave them each a sack of bread. Neither of the kids had 'fed the birds' before, so they were in for a treat. Both kids were a bit intimidated by the 'assertive gulls', but once they got the hang of throw bread bits..they had a blast (and entertained a fair amount of other beach strollers).

Then it was time to jump in puddles and climb sandy dunes. All too soon it was lunch time and we hit the famous 'Mo's' restaurant. I enjoyed their fine chowder and we all had a tasty lunch overlooking the beach as the high tide was rolling in.

A beautiful day on the Oregon Coast.

Long. Bold. Necklaces.

I've been having a bit of fun preparing for the spring/summer selling season. I love bold statement necklaces and have been trying my hand at them. Here are a few new installments currently available in my Etsy shop.

Grace Pink Jasper Statement Necklace

In this necklace I combined chunky nuggets of jasper with vintage styled filigree clasps. It lays nicely and as the color is in softer tones and the contrast is striking.

Antiquity Rustic Styled Long Necklace

I pulled out the Porcelain beads that I had left over from another necklace (now sold out) and combined them with a great hammered copper three piece oval pendant. Rugged, but stylish with southwestern flair.

I'm off to dash back into the studio while the kiddos are still napping.

Thankful Thursday

I've been meaning to blog weekly about the things I am thankful for, inspired by fellow blogger Cappy Sue. It's just been on my heart to make a point of this weekly. So, here goes:

1) I am thankful for humbling experiences. I hate them. But, I need them in order to better myself and remember to be more thoughtful.

2) I am thankful for the little vine maple tree outside my office window. I love being able to hang my bird feeders and catch a glimpse of the little feathered friends on occasion.

3) I am thankful for soft, rainy days. It's quite possible my husband will drag us out of the damp Pacific Northwest one of these days..so I'm cherishing the time I have to experience it.

Fort George Brewery in Astoria, Oregon

The hubby and I broke away from the kiddos for a date afternoon and drove to scenic Astoria, Oregon on the coast, to take in a flick and check out the Fort George Brewery.

We saw Avatar and immensely enjoyed ourselves (planning to check it out in 3-D). Then we slogged through the rain and found Fort George in Duane street and darted inside to find a nice cozy, pub setting.

The menu had a healthy mixture of local fair and pub favorites. The beverage selections were quite to my husband's liking. I choose a Blackthorn Hard Cider, which was very smooth, an import from England. Hubby had a Nut Red, which he quite enjoyed.

If you haven't spend much time along the Oregon Coast, give Astoria consideration next time you feel the need for salty air. Astoria boasts a fine collection of Victorian era homes, a fine pier to watch the mighty Columbia River push it's way into the Pacific Ocean, and of course, fine brew pubs such as Fort Gorge to quench your thirst.

Mixing it Up -- Talking about my Day Job

I know many of you Etsy shop owners are also dislocated workers. Meaning..you've been caught in this rotten economic downturn and are having a hard time finding new employment.

You might not know this, but my 'day job' is as a career counselor, resume wizard, computer skills trainer, GED prep instructor which is all wrapped up into the title 'Workforce Specialist'.

So, I'll be sharing some observations, stories and any tips or tricks I come across while working my day job with you, my blogging friends. In case it might be of some help or add some humor to these otherwise, dreary economic times.

As I write this, I have over 20 students in my GED study class right now, ages ranging from 16 - 60, all working diligently on the material they need to cover to pass their GED test and remove that educational barrier in order to find work, or head to college.

Symbolism in Jewelry

This year, it has been a goal to introduce some pieces of jewelry that while are pretty to look at, are also symbolic in nature.

I am beginning my collection with a few Tree of Life pieces. A beloved symbol in cultures and faiths around the world, the Tree of Life links the heavens, the earth, and all that is hidden and growing beneath.

I added an iridescent olive green coin pearl and a dark, mocha swarovski crystal to bring the moon and dark stars into play with the large pendant. It is a simple, but eye catching design.

Capturing the color of crystals

A mild morning puttering in the yard

It felt mild on this overcast Sunday morning, so I scooted the family outdoors and we worked on a few projects and tidying of the yard. Pots needed cleaning and flower beds needed fluffing.

It was pretty mushy out there. I believe the dogs might have permanently created a 'track' in our grass :( Not that 'Puma' the rotten cat would care, he's above such things.

Autumn Splendor Necklace

My first try combining colorful tumbled nuggets and antiqued brass components was a success. It was inspired by a request from my Father In-Law who needed a special gift for his niece (my husbands dear cousin) for Christmas.
Creating a jewelry piece with a special person in mind is really my favorite way to make jewelry. Our dear cousin is a tall, athletic gal with an incredible nurturing soul. She is stylish and creative, so creative in fact that she designs her own bicycling clothing.
I used tumbled turquoise magnesite nuggets in a colorful array with a pretty antiqued brass filagree clasp. Simple, but statement making..that was my hope to achieve.
I created two necklaces, the second of which is for sale at my shop.

New Banner Glee!

I cannot express how happy I am to have worked with StudioSub on my banner creations. I'm always pestering poor Olle for new colors or themes. He provides me with exactly what I want with cheerfulness and timeliness.
I'm so excited about my new banners. I'm all decked in Pink for Valentines Day and I'll be transitioning to a fresh, springy green look for March.

I recently went on a quest to help out the cute little birds who dwell in the court yard of my office park. I bought a few bird feeders to help them out over the winter months.

I am well aware of how geeky my co-workers think I am, with my little joy of birdwatching. The above pic is of the tree outside my window at work and I've hung two bird feeders and am happily enjoying my new little feathered friends as they stop by.

With the arrival of a Blue Moon in cancer, I felt my creative juices flowing as we kicked off the New Year! I had some lovely beads to sample from ArtBeads.com and am very happy with the resulting earrings. Here's a peek:

Blue Moon & Happy New Year Wishes

What a way to end the year with a Bang! A Blue Moon on New Years Eve! A rare occurrence indeed :)

Granted, here in the soggy Pacific Northwest, we've got a lovely rain storm clogging up the skies so I won't be seeing it.

My husband and I may just have to celebrate the event tonight with a bottle of Blue Moon wine from Bridgeview Winery in Oregon. I am quite partial to the Riesling. I have visited this darling little winery and the staff was delightful. Hmm..definitely going to pick up a bottle tonight!

Featured Etsy Artist Wudl's Woodshop - Craft Show Displays

For those of us who hit the craft show circuit, Wudl's Woodshop on Etsy is a great place to find smart craft show displays!I have been personally delighted by this artisans product as I purchased an earring card display. I sent him the above picture of how nicely my earrings were displayed at my next craft show! My customers often complimented me on the display. It was well constructed, a fair price and shipped quickly.

Wudl's also has other great craft displays, here are a few of my favorites.

Czech Pressed Glass Beads

I was delighted to be asked by Artbeads.com to sample some of their glass beads. I ventured into some styles of Czech glass picasso beads that I had admired before but had not previously tried. I love working with contrasting colors. And if I can work with something that could lend a vintage feel..all the more fun.

Here's a few pics of my most recent earring creations.

I enjoyed browsing Artbeads.com....it was hard to pick out which glass beads I wanted to sample! Right now they are running a 25% off glass beads promotion. I must admit, the picasso finish on these lovely beads was really fantastic for color contrasting and to lend a sophisticated, but can I say..rustic? finish.

Weekend Fun at the Ape Caves

Yesterday, we quickly suited up the kids and headed out for an impromptu family adventure. Our journey took us outside of Cougar, Washington to the Ape Caves, part of the Mt. St. Helens National Monument. This is a popular destination for 'NW Cave Enthusiasts' as the cave is a long lava tube.
We just wanted some snow. We've been chilled to the bone this past week with an onslaught of Arctic Air, but didn't get any of the white stuff normally associated with that type of weather pattern. (Disclaimer to the rest of the US...we know you've had really cold temps too! We're just wimpy and used to 37 degrees w/rain for the winter.)

We climbed up in elevation in search of the white stuff and didn't find much, but enjoyed ourselves on a nice little hike and got some lovely pine fresh air! The kids got to run around, stepping in the spots of icy snow and the dogs enjoyed all the new and exciting forest scents!

Full Moon at Dawn

I am so sad that I did not have a camera handy this morning to capture the large full moon low in the western sky. Dawn was breaking so the sky was a lighter blue with tinges of pinks beginning to form on the tips of the clouds. The moon had a pearly glow as it lumbered above.

The first heavy frost of the season was on the ground and things were coated in a fuzzy coat of white. The walk-way was slick and the grass crunchy. The air was very still.

It was an incredible sight with the combining light of the rising sun and setting moon creating a magical mood.

Sigh, no camera, so my prose will have to due for description.

Wednesday Thankful Spirit

Today I'm thankful for losing my job last winter. I felt desperate and depressed at the time but here are a few things the time off gave me:
1) Hours and hours to spend with my kiddo's.
2) A chance to have the time to give 'opening up a handmade jewelry' shop a try.
3) Time to spend cooking (which I otherwise loath).
4) Time to spend chatting and catching up with old friends (hooray for Facebook!)

This weekend I'll take the next step in my jewelry making career; I've agreed to sell at our local Saturday Market for the rest of their season.

I've always wanted to do this, just never had the time or belief in myself that I could do it.

But tonight anyway..I'll be making pumpkin and apples pies! And if it turns out as nice as this..I'll be thrilled!

Tuesday Thankful Spirit

My quest this week is to remind myself of what is truly important and to be thankful for those things dear to me.
The most important and precious thing I have is my family. Ten years ago, I thought I had my path ironed out. Career path, check, saving for home ownership, check, good social life, check..keeping fit, check. I am proud to announce that I have completely derailed from my list :) What I've gained instead are a wonderful husband and two beautiful children.

I really did not understand how much my heart could love. It was entirely untapped. My husband and my kids make me want to be a better person, a person that thinks about her impact on her community, her friends, co-workers and a person who finally has gained the confidence to shake off the 'rat race' and find peace by paving my own path.

Today, I am so thankful for my family.

Kicking off a week of 'Thanks'

I want to take this week and focus on the 'Thanksgiving' spirit. Over the past month I have been reading 'The Grapes of Wrath' again (only read it in high school previous..so it's been awhile ;) This year has been so painful for so many with our economic downturn. Job loses, home foreclosures, and the stock market plummeting. It has soured and embittered many of us.
This book has reminded me of how, through the changes that occurred after the Great Depression, many of us are not living in 'Hoovervilles' and watching our children slowly starve. Perspective.

I've done my fair share of griping about how this year has set our family back from our goals of being able to move and working in jobs we are excited about. I need to stop my griping. I am thankful that we have a cozy little house, enough food to eat and jobs that while they aren't hip, do pay the bills.Life could be so so so much harsher. Today I am thankful.

Coffee Snob?

In the Pacific Northwest, we're all about coffee. I remember back to my teen's when I swore I wouldn't get hooked. I looked down upon the way my parents seemed to 'need' it every morning. I was just so sure that I would be able to maintain a lifestyle where I didn't need anything.

[insert evil laugh from above]

I managed to get through college without a drop. Then, as fate would play out...I ended up working for the largest coffee roaster in Portland. They wanted me to sell their coffee beans. Soooo, in order to be an effective representative for the company, I needed to be able to 'speak' about the product. And then it was over. A coffee snob was born.

I raided my parents fridge, scolding them about their wicked ways of not only drinking stuff out of a tin can..but keeping it in the fridge!!! I made sure everyone in my life had access to 'great' gourmet coffee. And while I no longer work for that coffee roaster, I still lecture people about their nasty coffee habits and teach them about the importance of supporting the little guy and drinking a great cup.
So where does that leave me today? I've found a lovely small independent coffee roaster out of Packwood, Washington, whose expertly roasted and blended beans are gracing my lips as we speak, ground and brewed fresh daily.

Friends, seek out the good stuff! It's worth it!

Team Trade-A-Holics!

So, here's a little shout out to this fab and fun bunch of Etsy sellers.
I was so lonely for a long time on Etsy..I would read those lovely Etsy 'featured seller' articles on the Stork blog and I swear, each featured artist would mention how it was such a good experience to be part of an 'Etsy Team'. Well, I tried and I tried to join up..but they were full, they didn't respond..you catch my drift.
Then, I happened upon Team Trade A-holic via one of their crazy trading sales in the promotions forums and found myself a home.
I've participated in a few of their trading frenzies now and have had an awesome experience. We are gearing up for our 'Pre-Black Friday' sale event..so be on the look out for some stellar $10 deals..I know I'm already getting some inventory primed and ready for our big weekend sale!

Veteran's Day Family Adventures

I took a break from the beading studio and hit the road with the family on this Veteran's Day Holiday.

We left early in the morning and headed to our favorite beach in Seaside, Oregon. The kids were thrilled to take an adventure and enjoyed munching on goldfish in the car. We drove through some fierce rain showers and I was secretly nervous that we'd be running around on the beach...drenched from the rain not the ocean waves.

But, to our surprise...it cleared up and we enjoyed a beautiful morning at the beach. We took a long walk, found whole sand dollars and neat shells.

The kids took a great long nap upon our return home in the afternoon :)

I'm excited and nervous about the week ahead :) I have four jewelry shows this week and I feel like I've been in a whirlwind ~ all the pricing and tagging that goes into the prep process, it's a little daunting! However it is also very rewarding..to be able to see your creations packaged with care and set out in a dazzling display..*sigh* makes me happy! :)

A little Inspiration - Jane Austen

I love to read, I've always been a closet book nerd (ok..not so closet anymore) and one of my favorite authors is Jane Austen. I remember in high school, when our English class was *forced* to read Pride and Prejudice, how the class dreaded the book. I was secretly thrilled, but never dared to let on.
I read my old friend yearly and always find some new little nuance that I'd missed before. It's really a treat.
Here's a pair of earring I think would have been lovely at romantic ball with swirling dresses and witty banter.

Household Words has vinyl decals for the home, office and vehicle. I love that you can DIY and have such a profession finish (please note, I am terrible with a paintbrush....terrible! so how perfect for the klutz's like me?)

Adventures in Halloween

Saturday, I swear my kids had some kind of magical sugar high before it was even time to trick or treat! They were wild all day in anticipation of the big event.

It was my little girls first year hitting the neighborhood. She lasted about 5 or 6 houses..then she and I retreated back to our place to hand out the goodies. My son took my husband out for a marathon..haha! I got the easy job :) Here's some of our pics for the night:
